Throughout the summer and autumn, the Oulu2026 region offers a wide range of family-friendly events where visitors can discover local traditions, crafts, music and regional cuisine. Expect lively markets, village celebrations and cultural events for all ages.
Long Traditions with a Fresh Twist
Puolanka Traditional Market will take place on Saturday, 5 September, from 10:00 to 17:00. Alongside local food, handicrafts and culture, the event includes a stand-up comedy performance, a traditional marketplace atmosphere, community singing, traditional games and accordion music. Muhos Summer Wednesday Markets are held every Wednesday in July from 17:00 to 19:00 at the market square. The aim is to celebrate the local market tradition as an accessible and community-focused cultural concept. Each market features a changing program, including dance performances and activities for children and seniors. Every Wednesday market also includes a flea market. National Heritage Days will be celebrated in Tornio from 28–30 August. With a history dating back to 1949, the event honors the city’s rich cultural heritage through a giant market, workshops and art. Visitors can also enjoy excursions, competitions, performances and activities for all ages. On Saturday, Maustetytöt will perform at Åström Park beginning at 13:30. Vihanti Bull Festival celebrates its 60th anniversary on Saturday, 8 August, at Alpua sports field. The day begins with a children’s event featuring a robot dog, storybook characters and a hobby horse course. Families can also enjoy a performance by Pressan Katti Miska along with refreshments. The evening celebration starts at 19:00, offering food, drinks, games, dancing and a look back at the festival’s history. Live music will be provided by Komiat and party band Kopla X. Local Flavours and Food Traditions
In Siikalatva, the Neljän Kylän Kattilat (Pots of Four Villages) event brings traditional food to four villages. Each shared meal tells the story of its village, evokes memories and brings generations together. So far, the menu has featured barley-thickened smoked meat soup, nettle sausage soup and the regional favorite rössypotut. The fourth and final village event takes place in Pulkkila on Sunday, 26 July, where visitors can enjoy an Oslo Breakfast accompanied by tasting, storytelling and relaxed community gathering. Tyrnävä Potato Market, the largest market event in North Ostrobothnia, will be held on Saturday, 26 September. Every year, hundreds of vendors and thousands of visitors gather to stock up on potatoes for the winter while enjoying delicious food, entertainment and a lively market atmosphere. Culture and Experiences for All the Senses
Ancient Festivies at the Kierikki Science Centre in Oulu will take place 31 July–2 August. The event celebrates prehistory, traditions and living heritage through lectures, storytelling sessions, workshops, guided tours, music and live performances suitable for all ages. Read more: Ancient runaways
In Kempele, the family event Good to Grow Up in Kempele will be held on Saturday, 29 August. This year’s theme is cultural wellbeing. Visitors can enjoy a wide range of cultural and sports activities, music, food and live performances. Featured performers include YouTuber Tinke and Liikkuva Laulureppu. In Oulu, AistiFest returns on 7–8 August, inviting visitors to experience culture through all five senses. The festival offers delicious food, music, art and immersive sensory experiences.
