The northern summer everyone
is talking about

Share

Welcome to Oulu – European Capital of Culture 2026

Named one of the top travel destinations for 2026 by National Geographic, BBC Travel, CNN, AFAR and Condé Nast Traveler.

On the northern coast of Finland, the vibrant seaside city of Oulu invites you to experience a summer where world-class art, unforgettable festivals and beautiful northern nature come together.

Here, culture doesn’t stay only inside museum walls. In Oulu, art appears in unexpected places — a city hall, a cathedral, a shopping centre and, of course, in the middle of northern landscapes.

This is not your typical cultural destination.

Art everywhere

In Oulu, art appears where you least expect it. Major exhibitions and installations spread across the city — from museums and galleries to the historic City Hall, a shopping centre and even a cathedral. Climate Clock art route, opening in June 2026, makes it possible for us to enjoy world-class art in settings such as forests, rivers and seashores, highlighting local pride in the surroundings.

Discover experiences such as the photography exhibition PLAY by Fotografiska Tallinn, the immersive installation Layers in the Peace Machine, media art from the Finnish National Gallery and the cosmic sound installation The Logos inside Oulu Cathedral.

In Oulu, art is open, surprising, accessible and something you can encounter almost anywhere.

Europe’s most unique festivals

The Oulu2026 region stretches across northern Finland, from the coast to forests and fells. This vast cultural landscape creates space for some of the most unique festivals in Europe.

Dance to electronic music on top of a northern fell, discover folk music in the forest or listen to jazz by the sea in a small coastal town. Experience unforgettable moments under the midnight sun.

In Oulu, the summer culminates in August with the Delta Life spectacle, featuring the ultimate Oulu experience — the Air Guitar World Championships. And don’t miss the chance to enjoy the final moments of summer at the kilometre-long table of the Summer Night’s Dinner.

Floating saunas & northern summer

Summer in Oulu is full of light, energy and life.

Relax in a floating sauna on the Oulu River, take a refreshing dip in the water and enjoy long northern evenings that seem to last forever. Just minutes from the city centre, Oulu offers several small beaches that invite you to swim, walk along the shore and watch the sun slowly set over the sea. You can even try line fishing right next to the city centre. Head to Oulu in June for the Oulu sauna festival and enjoy all the ultimate Finnish sauna experiences in just a few days.

Sauna, sea air and endless summer light.
This is the soul of northern summer.

Taste of the North

Food is an essential part of the Oulu2026 experience.

Through the Arctic Food Lab programme, local restaurants, producers and chefs showcase the pure flavours of the north — whether you feel like a bowl of traditional salmon soup, cup of coffee and a real Finnish pulla sweet bun, a pint of local beer or even a flammkuchen with Nordic ingredients.

Every meal tells a story about northern nature, local ingredients and the creativity of the region.

Getting here is easy. Oulu is well connected by air and rail. Several flights operate daily between Helsinki and Oulu, and the one-hour flight is the fastest way to reach our northern seaside city.

You can also hop on a train or bus and enjoy the Nordic landscapes along the way. The fastest trains connect Helsinki and Oulu in just 5.5 hours, while the quickest bus journeys take 8–9 hours across Finland.

Art in the arctic darkness

Arriving later in the year?

As autumn deepens and the northern nights grow longer, Oulu transforms into a striking stage for art, light and immersive experiences. Darkness becomes part of the show.

In autumn 2026, the international Lumo Art & Tech Festival brings together art and technology across the city from light and sound installations to experimental digital works presented in unexpected venues. The beloved Lumo Light Festival illuminates the city with large-scale light artworks. This annual event attracts around 100,000 visitors each year, and during the European Capital of Culture year it will grow even bigger, longer and shine on an even more international stage.

One of the season’s highlights is Beyond the Sky, a spectacular collaboration by Oulu Sinfonia that combines astrophotography by Jukka-Pekka Metsävainio with a powerful musical composition by Lauri Porra, conducted by Dalia Stasevska.

Beneath the city centre, Danish artist Jakob Kudsk Steensen creates a unique immersive world inspired by disappearing sub-arctic ecosystems, presented deep inside the vast underground parking complex that stretches beneath the city centre.

The cultural year culminates in December with the world premiere of Snowball, a magical family musical set in the land of the Northern Lights and performed at Oulu Hall.

Even in the darkest months of the year, Oulu shines with art, light and imagination.
