Share

The Bothnian Bay, rivers, and lakes are an essential part of the Oulu2026 region’s landscape. In many Oulu2026 events, water serves as a source of inspiration, a venue, and even a stage for artistic performances. Maritime and water-based experiences can be enjoyed both in Oulu and across its partner municipalities.

Summer in the Oulu2026 region offers a wide range of water-themed events, including steamship theatre performance, the Soiva Laiva cruise, and visits aboard a sailing vessel.

Water as a Stage

On the shores of Lake Oulujärvi—often called the “Sea of Kainuu”—the Oulujärvi Steamboat Theatre transforms water into a stage. On Saturday, 25 July, the historic steamship Kouta, more than a century old, takes passengers on an immersive theatre cruise from Kajaani to the Ärjä Art Festival. Here, the ship is more than a means of transport—it becomes part of the story itself. At the end of the cruise, the theatre company arriving aboard Kouta performs on Ärjä Island, with free admission to the performance. Read more: Oulujärvi Steamboat Theatre

The Ärjä Art Festival 24-26 July also features a diverse programme of performing arts, from dance and music to contemporary art. Centred on the future of our planet, this year’s theme is Light and Resistance. The festival takes place in the unique natural surroundings of the Ärjä Island nature reserve, celebrating art while respecting its exceptional waterside environment. Read more: Ärjä Art Festival

As part of the festival week, the Soiva Laiva (Music on Board) Cruise sets sail on Saturday, 18 July, from 7–9 pm, featuring a live performance by Fredericks.
