The Summer Night’s Dinner invites locals and visitors to enjoy a diverse selection of food and entertainment, and spend time together around beautifully set tables on Saturday 15 August. The event is open to everyone, free of charge and has no age limit. The event will also bring changes to traffic arrangements in Oulu city centre.
The Summer Night’s Dinner is part of the Oulu2026’s Arctic Food Lab programme and is expected to be one of the highlights of the European Capital of Culture summer in Finland. Tables will be set out over a distance of about one kilometre across Oulu city centre: from the Market Square along Rotuaari and from the front of the City Hall along Hallituskatu all the way to the railway station. You can join the tables at any time from 12 noon onwards.
Around 3,500 people can be seated at the tables at one time, meaning that many times more people are expected to enjoy the event throughout the day. Horticulture students from OSAO will decorate the tables with floral arrangements. The tables will be set with unique tablecloths created through a collaboration between Proto—Designers of Northern Finland, and the China Academy of Art from Oulu’s twin city, Hangzhou. Wheelchair spaces are reserved at the ends of the tables, and highchairs are available for children.
Around 60 food businesses will be serving portions at the event. The selection includes food stalls and trucks, established restaurants and cafés, as well as shops. Visitors can enjoy Nordic flavours alongside Asian, African, Mexican and Mediterranean cuisine. Restaurants and cafés taking part in the event are located throughout the event area, from the Market Square to Rotuaari pedestrian street and along Hallituskatu towards the railway station. Food stalls and trucks will be concentrated mainly on Kirkkokatu and Hallituskatu.
You are also welcome to bring your own homemade treats to enjoy at the tables – or simply come along to soak up the atmosphere and enjoy the programme.

From live music to flea-market finds
The event kicks off at 11:30, when a group walk representing the Oulu2026 partner municipalities sets off from Linnansaari and heads towards the event area. The Toripolliisi statue will be decorated in chef’s whites, and the sound of a cooking pot being struck in Rotuaari square will mark the official opening of the event at 12 noon.
There will be three stages in the event area: at Rotuaari, in Otto Karhi Park and at the railway station end of Hallituskatu. The stages will feature live music and other programme throughout the day. KLUB Kirppis (Flea Market) invites visitors to browse for second-hand treasures along Hallituskatu.
OSAO will set up a hangout area in Snellman Park, while Taito Northern Ostrobothnia invites visitors to get knitting. A few themed tables will also offer the chance to spend time enjoying a particular theme or activity, such as comics, food traditions or meeting new people.

Traffic arrangements during the event
The Summer Night’s Dinner will bring changes to traffic arrangements in the event area. These include Kauppurienkatu from the Market Square towards Rotuaari, Kirkkokatu in front of the City Hall, and Hallituskatu from the City Hall to the railway station. The streets and roadside parking areas will be closed to car traffic from 14 to 16 August.
In addition to the streets mentioned above, the event will affect cross traffic. Traffic will be closed on Koulukatu and Mäkelininkatu at Hallituskatu. On Kirkkokatu, the section between Asemakatu and Pakkahuoneenkatu will be closed. Rautatienkatu, Uusikatu, Pakkahuoneenkatu, Torikatu, Aleksanterinkatu and Rantakatu in the vicinity of the event area will remain open to traffic, but the event may affect access and traffic in the area.
Kivisydän car park can be accessed as normal via the Hallituskatu entrance. A no-parking restriction will be in place around the clock on event days on Hallituskatu between the railway station and Isokatu, and on Kirkkokatu between Asemakatu and Pakkahuoneenkatu.
There will be changes to local bus routes and stops, as well as taxi ranks, in the city centre on the event day, with temporary traffic arrangements in place. Local bus routes A–C will use Pakkahuoneenkatu and Asemakatu instead of Hallituskatu, with temporary stops located along these streets. Route D will run via Torikatu and Saaristonkatu, with temporary stops at Valve and Pekuri. The taxi rank in Otto Karhi Park will be temporarily relocated to the northern side of the park, on Isokatu. There will be two bicycle parking areas in the event area: in Otto Karhi Park and at the railway station end of Hallituskatu. Cycling in the event area should be avoided; if you bring a bicycle, please walk it through the area. Extra caution is recommended during the event build-up and dismantling on 14 and 16 August. E-scooters are not permitted in the event area. Visitors are encouraged to arrive by public transport, by bicycle or on foot.
The Oulu Culture Foundation, which is responsible for Oulu2026 and the Arctic Food Lab programme, is organising the Summer Night’s Dinner for the fourth time.
