From poetry singing, reading circles and book fairs to literary encounters – the Oulu2026 region offers a wide range of experiences for literature lovers. Immerse yourself in the world of stories and poems, meet authors, discover new perspectives and be inspired by the joy of reading.

During late summer and autumn, a variety of literary events will be organised across the Oulu2026 region, inviting people to pause and reflect on the power of words. The programme offers experiences for passionate readers as well as for those whose interest in literature is only beginning to grow.
Gatherings around books
The Raahe Book and Record Fair, held on 16–19 September, explores the diverse world of literary arts. This year’s theme is internationality. The programme includes artist visits, theatre performances, literary-themed film screenings and art exhibitions. There is something to experience for all ages. Read more: Raahe Book and Record Fair
The Kalajoki Book Fair takes place on 6–7 November. The fair explores a variety of themes, including European identity, Kalajoki’s history and cultural heritage. Discussions will also highlight Timo Honkela’s work Rauhankone. The programme includes author visits, a spoken word event, music and literary interviews. Read more: Kalajoki Book Fair 2026
The third Oulu Book Fair begins on Friday 9 October with The Wild Night of Literature event. The evening programme includes object theatre, improvised poetry drawing, music, dance and a performance by a youth theatre group. Read more: The Wild Night of Literature
The Oulu Book Fair will be held on 9–11 October. The main venues are Oulu Lyseo and Cultural Centre Valve. This year’s theme is Northernness. The fair offers meaningful encounters, engaging discussions and fascinating author guests from Finland and abroad. Read more: Oulu Book Fair
Reading experiences and exchange of ideas
The Oulu City Library Saari will host Sámi literature evenings during the European Capital of Culture year. The final evening will take place on 25 November and will focus on Skolt Sámi literature. The events feature live poetry, meetings with authors and discussions about the current state of Sámi-language literature. The events are open to everyone interested in the topic. Saari also hosts Reading Experiences from Europe, a reading circle focusing on European literature, culture and ways of life. The autumn meetings will take place on Thursdays 17 September, 15 October and 12 November. Read more: Central Library Book Club: Reading Experiences from Europe
The reading circles are part of the Lukevin kaupunni (The Reading City) campaign, which aims to make Oulu the most reading-oriented European Capital of Culture in 2026.

When words come to life
At the Oulu Children’s Cultural Centre Kotilo, The Son of the Sun Blooming in the Shadow – Exhibition World on Jukka Itkonen’s Poetry is on display from 25 April to 19 September. The exhibition introduces visitors to Jukka Itkonen’s poetry through rhymes, rhythms and changing seasons. Admission is free. On Friday 18 September, the Kouta Hall in Kajaani will host the Call of the Kalevala singing workshop, where participants can experience traditional rune singing, learn about the Kalevala and discuss cultural heritage. The workshop is led by contemporary rune singers Ilona Korhonen and Maari Kallberg. The workshop is open to everyone and free of charge. During the summer, Siikalatva libraries will feature Garden Stories -open albums, where visitors can leave anonymous greetings, memories, thoughts or drawings. The albums provide an opportunity to share personal experiences and discover other people’s stories.
