“MARAKNI – Roma Culture Market” is a project that aims to bring people together through various events presenting Roma traditions. The core idea is to bring a breeze of Roma culture from around the world to Oulu and its surrounding municipalities, thereby promoting interaction between the majority population and the Roma groups.
“Marakni” is inclusive and collective project, where people can crochet Roma lace, bake Karelian pies, watch new (and slightly older) European Roma films, listen to both Finnish and foreign Roma musicians, dance tango and get acquainted with photo and art exhibitions about Roma culture.
Our impact to Culture-
climate change
The Nordic Roma Museum established its second location in Northern Ostrobothnia, in the historic vicerage of Pyhäjoki, as part of the Marakni project. In this way, we have been implementing a change in the cultural climate for over a year by making Roma culture visible not only in Pyhäjoki, but also in the entire Oulu2026 area. Together with the inhabitants from Pyhäjoki, we have started one of our finest community art projects: the “Lace Bridge” based on old Roma lace and Ostrobothnian dowry lace, which already reached 40-meter lenght this first summer and was presented in Prague too.
