Joy from Urban Contemporary Art: Oulu2026 murals
With the Joy from Urban Contemporary Art -project, a series of murals will be created in the Oulu2026 area, reflecting the unique character of its location. New artworks will be completed annually on the journey toward the EcOC year 2026.
The art project, which widely engages city residents, invites everyone to participate in the annual public votes, which select the districts of each year’s artwork. The artists selected through international open calls will explore the chosen locations and bring the special features and character of the regions into the works they create. The artworks will enliven our shared urban space for years to come, long after the European Capital of Culture year.

Joy from Urban Contemporary Art -project strengthens the status of public art by involving citizens in the creation process of the artworks. Free access public art is equal, as it is available to everyone regardless of age, gender or social status. The artworks will remain at their locations for years after the European Capital of Culture year, bringing joy, storytelling and visual value long after their completion.
Community is strengthened when our shared public space is developed through a collective art experience.
