From film camera to interpreter of Arctic nature

Tiina Törmänen is a Finnish photographer whose relationship with photography began at the age of 17 with a film camera. In her early years, she focused on documentary portrait photography, capturing people, atmospheres, and authentic moments.

After 2010, Tiina transitioned to digital photography, and at the same time her interest increasingly shifted toward landscape and nature photography. Over the years, she has become especially known for her atmospheric and soulful images, where the forests of Lapland, silent marshlands, and Arctic highlands appear almost frozen in time.

In Tiina’s photographs, nature is not merely a landscape — it is a feeling, an experience, and a place where all sense of hurry disappears.

The underwater world opened a new perspective

In 2018, Tiina expanded her work into underwater photography, discovering an entirely new world that has fascinated her ever since.

Beneath the surface of Arctic freshwater environments lies a hidden landscape rarely seen by people. Tiina’s images reveal the silence, strange forms, and almost untouched atmosphere of the underwater world in a way that invites viewers to pause and reflect.

“As a photographer, I’m fascinated by the invisible side of our Arctic freshwater environments. What does life look like on the other side of the surface, in a world that has always been right beside us, yet still so far away? I have experienced the underwater world as a timeless space that surprises with its strange forms and untouched beauty. Time stands still there. It is completely silent,” Tiina describes.

One of her underwater works, a photograph featuring perch, was also published in National Geographic.

A meditative approach reflected in her work

Tiina’s way of working is often deeply meditative. She spends long periods in nature observing light, movement, and silence before taking a photograph. This calm approach is reflected in the depth and layered atmosphere of her work.

Through her images, viewers can almost feel the cold water, the misty forest, and the silence of northern nature.

International recognition and visibility

Over the years, Tiina Törmänen has worked on a wide range of projects, from wedding photography to nature documentaries. Her work has been featured in several solo exhibitions in Finland as well as international group exhibitions, including the Alt.+1000 and Nuit de la Photo events in Switzerland.

Her photographs have also been published in numerous blogs and magazines. In recent years, her work has gained recognition in the prestigious Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition.

The silence of nature at the core of her art

Tiina Törmänen’s work combines the sensitivity, silence, and spirit of exploration found in northern nature. Her photographs invite viewers to pause for a moment and see the environment in a new way — including the hidden worlds that usually remain invisible beneath the surface.
