The first Midnight Sun Run Oulu brought almost a thousand runners to Oulu’s summer night in July and laid the foundation for a new annual running event.
On Saturday, 4 July, something new was happening in Nallikari. The first Midnight Sun Run Oulu started in the afternoon with the Sun Run Kids event, and as the evening went on, runners taking part in the 42 km, 21 km and 10 km distances lined up at the start. Throughout the day, people of different ages took on different distances in Nallikari.
A total of 976 runners took part in the event. Midnight Sun Run Oulu brought together runners from Oulu, other parts of Finland and around the world, with 22 different nationalities represented.
Running, culture and the magic of the midnight sun
From the very beginning, the idea behind Midnight Sun Run Oulu was to create an event where runner meets the city, culture and the northern summer night.
The routes were designed to add to the overall experience and make the run itself more memorable. They took runners through Oulu’s seaside scenery, passing city landmarks as well as artworks created as part of the European Capital of Culture year.
The timing of the event added its own northern touch to the experience. The starts took place in the evening, and the final kilometres were run in the light of the summer night. While many running events start to wind down after the finish line, at Midnight Sun Run Oulu the evening continued in Nallikari.
From the finish line to AfterRun
After the run, participants could continue the evening at AfterRun. The programme included live music and a DJ, food and drinks, as well as opportunities to recover, enjoy the sauna and take a dip in the sea.
From the beginning, AfterRun was an important part of the Midnight Sun Run Oulu concept. The goal was not only to create a running event, but a full event day where the time spent together after crossing the finish line also has its place.
Sun Run Kids
The youngest members of the family also had their own free Sun Run Kids running event. The event quickly reached its maximum capacity, with a total of 150 runners under the age of 12 signing up for the 500-metre and 1,000-metre distances.
The first year created the foundation for the future
Organising the first Midnight Sun Run Oulu as part of the Oulu2026 European Capital of Culture year also marked the beginning of a new annual event. From the start, the goal has been to build an annual running event in Oulu that attracts participants from Finland and around the world.
Feedback from the first year gives us a great foundation to keep developing the event: 91.5% of those who responded to the participant survey said they would like to take part in Midnight Sun Run Oulu again.
And next summer is already in the works.
