The Arctic Food Lab’s Summer Night’s Dinner invites Oulu locals and visitors to enjoy food, entertainment and time together in the city centre on Saturday 15 August. Tables will be set for a total distance of about one kilometre across Oulu city centre: from the Market Square along Rotuaari and from the front of the City Hall along Hallituskatu all the way to the railway station. Starting at 11:30, the event begins as the parade of Oulu’s 39 partner municipalities leaves Linnansaari for the main venue. The Toripolliisi statue will be decorated with in chef’s whites, with the sounding of a pot in Rotuaari Square marking the event’s opening.

More than 50 food businesses have already signed up, ranging from street-food stalls to established restaurants and cafés. In addition to Nordic flavours, there will be a variety of dishes on offer, including Asian, African, Mexican and Mediterranean cuisine. You can also sit at the tables with your own homemade treats, or simply to enjoy the atmosphere and the programme.

All-day family entertainment

There will be a programme of events and fun activities along the streets and on 3 stages throughout the event, from 12 pm to 9 pm. Performing on the Radio Pooki stage at Rotuaari are the folk dance group Raito, magician Roope Ylitalo, SanFineira, Frosty River and DJ NiceRice. The street dance association OKT’s summer jams are also set to take place. Performing on the Otto Karhi stage are DJ Sofia, Väisänen jne., Henry Ojutkangas, The Beatles Band, Mantella and DJ Malsson. The programme on the Juureva IS stage, located at the end of the railway station on Hallituskatu, features Maitopojat, Puumiehet Show, Katalat and Moonshine Bright.

OSAO is setting up a hangout area in Snellman Park. Taito Pohjois-Pohjanmaa ry invites eventgoers to do some knitting, and Oulu Fungi is organising a mushroom-themed cooking competition. Local food traditions from across the broad Oulu2026 region are being showcased by the municipalities, whose contributions will also be reflected in the stage programme.

A map of the event area, introductions to the food vendors and stage schedules can be found online at https://arcticfoodlab.fi/en/summernightsdinner26/. Availability and content may vary. Food vendors will have their menus revealed on the website in early August.

“Where people meet, hearts connect”

The long table display winding through the city centre will look spectacular in its own right. Horticulture students from OSAO will decorate the tables with floral arrangements. The tables are set with unique cloths created through a collaboration between Proto, the Designers’ Association of Northern Finland, and the China Academy of Art from Oulu’s twin city, Hangzhou.

In this design project, five students spent over a year at their home university getting to know Oulu and northern culture, exploring what connects the twin cities, and designing the patterns. The guidance given to the students was that this was a project for friendship and peace in an especially unsettled world.

The end result is five tablecloth patterns with the themes of people, culture, nature, architecture and technology. When guests sit at the Summer Night’s Dinner table in Oulu on Saturday 15 August, the slogan created by the five design students at China Academy of Art in Oulu’s sister city Hangzhou will come true: Where people meet, hearts connect.

The Summer Night’s Dinner is part of the Oulu2026 Arctic Food Lab programme. Now in its fourth year, the event is produced by the Oulu Culture Foundation. Event partners include Proto ry, OSAO, Sanoma Media, Bauer Media, Oulu Fungi, Haurun Jäteauto, Uniresta, K-Supermarket Pekuri, Balmuir, Taito Pohjois-Pohjanmaa ry, Oulun kirjakauppa, Oulu Comics Center, Joo Group, Otaxi, Pörhön Autoliike and WTF Design.
