The artist for the fifth Oulu2026 mural will be selected through an open portfolio call

An artist is being sought through an open portfolio call to create the fifth mural in the Oulu2026 mural series. The selected artist will realize the work in central Oulu in June 2026. The call is open from 12 November to 7 December 2025.

Oulu will be the European Capital of Culture in 2026. To celebrate the year, the fifth artwork in the Oulu2026 mural series will be created in the city center. The artist will be chosenthrough an open portfolio call aimed at professional artists working in Finland. 

 

The call opens on 12 November and closes on 7 December. Professional artists aged 18 and over who live or work permanently in Finland are eligible to apply. The selected artist willreceive an artist’s fee of €10,000 in addition to production costs. The exact location of the mural will be announced in early 2026. 

 

The artist selection will be made by a professional jury consisting Katariina Kemppainen (Curator, Oulu Museum of Art), Inka Hyvönen (Producer, Oulu Cultural Foundation), Yiorgos Slunga (Art Coordinator, Upeart) and an artist member to be elected later.

The Oulu2026 mural series, launched in 2022, has already brought new artworks to various parts of the city, including Rajakylä, Tuira Myllyoja, and Toppila. During the Capital of Culture year, a variety of activities – such as art tours and competitions – will take place around all the murals. 

 

Upon completion, the Oulu2026 murals will become part of the Oulu Museum of Art’s public art collection.
