SmilingOulu26 brings people together through photography, celebrating minorities, lonely individuals, and the power of a smile. A project full of encounters, stories, and community spirit.

SmilingOulu26 is a photography project born from the need to bring people together and highlight stories that might otherwise go unheard. Behind the project stands Augmenters Cultural Association and its founder, photographer Kristian Kaarna. At the same time, an important collaboration was established with Multicultural Center Villa Victor in Oulu.
Augmenters was founded in the vibrant cultural village of Riogordo, Spain, to promote both local and international cultural activities. The association carries out EU-funded projects such as Leader and Erasmus initiatives, and organizes exhibitions and courses both in Spain and Finland.
The idea for SmilingOulu26 grew out of Kristian Kaarna’s earlier annual photography competitions, where the power of community was evident. These competitions encouraged local people to participate, learn, and share their own culture, while also strengthening the vitality and visibility of their regions.
In 2026, the idea is expanded into a full-year project in Oulu, while the village of Riogordo will simultaneously organize a similar competition. The photos will be exchanged between the two countries, offering an opportunity to explore whether minorities and lonely individuals share common experiences across cultures — and to seek ways to support and strengthen community connections.
The main activities of the project in Oulu:
- Photography courses in spring 2026 – open to everyone, using mobile phones.
- Photography competition on the theme of minorities and loneliness – easy and accessible participation. No previous experience is required; we are looking for authentic and touching photos where atmosphere and people shine through — technical perfection is not the goal.
- Gala Event on June 10, 2026, where the best photos will be awarded, the exhibition opened, and engaging panel discussions held in easy-to-understand language (plain Finnish). We will also enjoy music and performances by minority groups.
- Photography exhibitions will tour accessible locations throughout Oulu and at Villa Victor’s events.
- A video work created from the competition entries will be presented at the Lumo Light Festival.
Although we are addressing serious topics, we approach them with smiles and positivity. Our goal is to build bridges, create encounters, and remind everyone that in the end, we are not so different — we are united by humanity, the need to be seen, and the desire to belong.
SmilingOulu26 is an invitation to meet, understand, and smile together.
We are proudly part of the Oulu2026 – European Capital of Culture program.
