The prestigious travel media Condé Nast Traveler has selected Oulu as one of the best destinations for 2026. The recognition strengthens Oulu’s position as one of Europe’s most exciting travel cities, just ahead of its year as European Capital of Culture 2026.

Editorial teams from Condé Nast Traveler’s international editions collaborated to compile a list of the most inspiring destinations for 2026.
“I’m truly happy that Oulu is getting the recognition it deserves for the coming year, and we look forward to welcoming visitors to our beautiful city. The Oulu2026 cultural programme is incredibly diverse – ranging from major urban events to peaceful encounters in nature – reflecting the unique spirit of our region. Next year is definitely the time to head to Oulu and the wider Oulu2026 area to experience the richness of northern culture,” says Samu Forsblom, Programme Director of Oulu2026.
Oulu is ready for the international spotlight
The recognition comes at a significant moment: in 2026, Oulu will serve as the European Capital of Culture together with 39 municipalities across Northern Finland. The Oulu2026 programme includes performing arts, festivals, exhibitions, children’s and youth events, community projects, as well as permanent artworks and art routes. Events will take place throughout the Oulu2026 region, with much of the programme free of charge.
Condé Nast Traveler’s recognition follows a series of international accolades — in recent months, Oulu has also been named to National Geographic’s Best of the World 2026 list, Frommer’s Best Places to Go in 2026, and Intrepid Travel’s Not Hot List of emerging destinations.
