The first, virtual part of the Layers in the Peace Machine installation, entitled Layer of Sharing, will open online on 4 September. Layers in the Peace Machine, a media installation by the Ekho Collective, will be on display at the Oulu City Hall during the European Capital of Culture year starting 15 January 2026.
Layer of Sharing invites participants to share their memories of peace and to examine them in relation to those shared by others. Completed through interaction with the audience, Layer of Sharing is transformed after each memory shared by the participants. Memories of peace shared online around the world will also influence the work that will be displayed at the Oulu City Hall, and thus the experiences of others. Layer of Sharing can be easily accessed and participated in online at peacemachine.eu.
Layers in the Peace Machine explores peace as an active, ongoing process. Offering opportunities to interact with the work and with other participants through movement, hearing, language and cognition, it encourages reflection on one’s own relationship with peace and related questions, shedding light on different aspects of peacebuilding.
Layers in the Peace Machine is based on the book The Peace Machine by AI researcher Timo Honkela. The artwork is produced by the Oulu Cultural Foundation, the organisation responsible for the Oulu2026 project. It is designed and implemented by Ekho Collective, a group of art, design and technology professionals specialising in immersive art formed by Calvin Guillot, Essi Huotari, Vertti Luostarinen, Saara-Henriikka Mäkinen, Sini Parikka, Ilmari Pesonen, Olivia Pohjola, Iina Taijonlahti and Timo Tikka.
Also on display at Oulu City Hall for the next year is the exhibition Earworm – Media Art from Kiasma. Admission to both exhibitions is free of charge. Visit times will be available for booking from 1 December 2025.
