The Mielestäni product series captures the spirit of Oulu2026 cultural capital year: doing things together, local pride, and stories that deserve to be seen and shared.

The Mielestäni product series, created through a design collaboration between Osuuskauppa Arina, Oulu2026, and designer Susanna Sivonen, brings forward a layered pattern co‑created by the people of Oulu. The pattern reflects culture, environment, change, and individuals in a shared moment—both today and in the future.
The roots of the pattern reach back to a map of Oulu from the late 19th century, adding a concrete and historical layer. This map is complemented by colours, abstract shapes, and recognizable details from Oulu’s surroundings, forming a layered visual whole. The pattern also includes routes symbolizing life paths and connections. The final design emerged in Mielestäni workshops, where Oulu residents shared their thoughts and wishes—elements that Susanna Sivonen incorporated into the pattern.
The pattern is featured on the clothing of Oulu2026 volunteers as well as on products sold in selected Osuuskauppa Arina stores. As the main partner of the cultural capital year’s volunteer program, Osuuskauppa Arina helps bring the pattern to an exceptionally broad audience. Volunteers play a significant role in the success of events and in improving cultural accessibility—through them, the pattern becomes visible both locally and to international visitors.
Most of the products are created in collaboration with local entrepreneurs. The selection includes, among other things, chocolate, T‑shirts, earrings, scarves, tote bags, and paper goods. The product series supports local expertise and strengthens community spirit.
The series is designed to delight as everyday items, but it also works as a souvenir or meaningful gift for visitors—reminding them of the cultural capital year, Oulu, and its many stories.
