After a summer of festivals, Olavi Uusivirta takes the stage at Ouluhalli on Sat 26 September with his band, Oulu Sinfonia and Oulu All Star Big Band, conducted by Eero Lehtimäki. Expect a storm of hits in stunning new arrangements.
Alongside the familiar favourites, the concert will feature music from Olavi’s latest, critically acclaimed album Camouflage. “The album offers exactly what people need right now. […] Almost every song feels like a warm summer evening,” writes Aki Nuoppanen in his review for Soundi magazine.
The arrangements boldly make the most of the large-scale line-up. Marzi Nyman, Arttu Takalo and Mikko Hassinen, among others, have brought fresh colours to the music, skilfully weaving together the worlds of popular music, jazz and orchestral music. Familiar songs are given a new pulse as rock meets the rich colours of the symphony orchestra and the rhythmic power of the big band.
“Oulu All Star Big Band is always excited to join Oulu Sinfonia for a concert together. When you put two big orchestras together, it’s an experience for the musicians, too. The collaboration feels natural and inspiring, and the musicians really enjoy it,” says Jaakko Jauhiainen, trumpeter and conductor of Oulu All Star Big Band. Maija Kuusisto, General Manager of Oulu Sinfonia, echoes this, noting that bringing the two orchestras together always creates a new kind of energy. The orchestral arrangements specially created for the concert honour Uusivirta’s music while adding a whole new dimension to it.
