Oulu is the European Capital of Culture for 2026. As part of the year’s programme, the Lumo Art & Tech Festival, will be held for the first time, offering ten days of experiences where art, science and technology merge into one. The event invites creative professionals from the fields of digital art and technology from around the world to Oulu for seminars, conferences and other gatherings. The city has a lot to offer in terms of arts and networking opportunities.

Nokia is the main partner of the festival. Nokia’s newly completed Oulu Smart Campus, Home of Radio, is the world’s northernmost and most advanced research and development centre for radio technology, employing around 3000 experts. The campus combines high technology with respect for nature, sustainability and the circular economy – values that are also central to the Oulu2026 programme.

“Nokia’s involvement is very significant for the whole Oulu2026 project. The Lumo Art & Tech festival builds bridges between art and technology, and our collaboration is a perfect example of this,” says Piia Rantala-Korhonen, CEO of Oulu2026.

“Oulu has long been a key hub of cutting-edge technology for Nokia, with a unique ecosystem built around it. Now, Oulu is also emerging as a center of culture. Oulu2026 and the Lumo Art & Tech Festival create an exceptional opportunity to bring creativity and technology together – the elements that drive innovation and growth,” says Jarkko Pyykkönen, Head of Nokia’s Oulu unit.

Oulu will be the European Capital of Culture in 2026. The European Capital of Culture year will extend across 39 partner municipalities in northern Finland. The aim is to create a lasting cultural climate change. The cultural climate change signifies a permanently richer cultural life and a transformation for the region. The cultural climate change combines culture, art, and technology in even unexpected ways, creates encounters, and fosters interaction. Oulu2026 offers inspiring, sustainable, and European content already before 2026, when the comprehensive European Capital of Culture year culminates. The Oulu Culture Foundation is responsible for Oulu2026.
