As part of the Adaptation project, Photo North – Northern Photographic Centre has invited artist Michèle Boulogne to participate in an artist residency at the Sodankylä Geophysical Observatory during winter 2026. The residency program is part of Photo North’s Oulu2026 Capital of Culture project Adaptation. Michèle Boulogne (b. 1996, Martinique) is an artist living and working in the Netherlands who works in the field of textile art.
At the Sodankylä Geophysical Observatory, Michele will continue her work on space, force fields, and related phenomena alongside identity and cultural memory. Since 2024, Michele has been an active member of the Venus Conversations collective, which brings together the fields of culture, science, and art. Venus Conversations is an ongoing project until 2034, creating dialogue and artistic productions around the planet Venus. The artist’s previous work, Venus does not exist (2021), focuses on making the mysterious planet Venus visible, reflecting on how technology shapes our collective image of unattainable landscapes with the help of technical data.
Boulogne’s works combine various textile techniques such as weaving, dyeing, and knitting into a collage form. She draws inspiration for her work from Caribbean heritage and space exploration, using them as a basis for exploring fragmented history, overlapping temporalities, and the forces of nature. During the residency, the artist will create a new work that will be part of the Adaptation exhibition opening at the Oulu Art Museum in October 2026.
Oulu is the European Capital of Culture for the year 2026. Adaptation is part of the Oulu2026 cultural programme and cultural climate change.
