We all long to be seen as we are. Smiling Oulu 26 was born from the need to bring together those who are often left on the sidelines – and to create encounters where loneliness gives way to a smile.

Smiling Oulu 26 – a photography project about loneliness, diversity, and human connection

Even though the world has changed and many topics are now discussed more openly, fears and prejudices toward difference are still part of everyday life for many. Loneliness, social exclusion, bullying, and the fear of what others think remain real problems – and for many, they have only deepened since the COVID-19 pandemic. Smiling Oulu 26 brings these issues into the spotlight through photography and invites the people of Oulu to help shift the atmosphere in a more positive direction.

Smiling Oulu 26 is an official part of Oulu2026 – the European Capital of Culture year.
This photography project focuses on themes of minorities and loneliness. Loneliness is seen as its own kind of minority – something that anyone can experience at some point in their life. The aim is to reduce isolation, strengthen community, and create space for new friendships, shared experiences, and meaningful encounters across languages, genders, ages, and cultural backgrounds.

In 2026, the largest photography competition in the Oulu2026 region will be held, highlighting the experiences of people who are lonely or belong to minorities – but most of all, showcasing photographs that capture moments of hope, joy, and connection. The project also includes workshops, exhibitions, and participatory events throughout the year, and will culminate in a major public celebration that brings everyone together.

It’s often assumed that tension exists only between majority and minority groups, but fear and mistrust can also exist within minorities. This project seeks to break down those invisible barriers and remind us that diversity is not a threat – it’s a strength. Connection requires nothing more than openness and space where everyone can be themselves.

Photography can reveal the world in a new way – and sometimes, it can change the way we think or even the course of a life.
Smiling Oulu 26 aims to make Oulu a warmer, more welcoming place for all of us. Because in the end – people are not that different, no matter where in the world they live.
