Kierikki’s all activities in the years 2025 and 2026 are officially part of the Oulu2026 European Capital of Culture programming. In the Ancient Survival Skills project, the prehistoric times, reinforcing our connection to nature and communality make up a continuum that connects us to our ancient ancestors.

In Kierikki, a modern person returns to their prehistoric roots and learns to find the ancient survivor in themself as well as to see their strong ties with nature. The Stone Age culture of communality and spirituality created a basis for hundreds of generations.

“The Ancient Survival Skills project centers strong and essential basic survival skills. Modern people no longer have innate knowledge of these skills even though they were routine for Stone Age people. During the European Capital of Culture year, we will expand Kierikki’s activities. For example, I want to emphasize the coming Stone Age burial complex. It offers visitors a unique trip into ancient burial rites and rituals”, explains the Director of Kierikki’s project Patrik Franzén.

Ancient Survival Skills in the event-filled summer

In the summer season 2025, visitors get to practice ancient survival skills, explore the Stone Age Village and try out Stone Age routines. Prehistoric skills, such as paddling, archery and rock painting, deepen the visitors’ connection to nature and communal culture.

In June and July, the family-oriented and popular Adventure Days will be organized (June 14 and July 12). On top of adventure, the entire Stone Age Village will be converted into a massive game board. In the Muinaisuuden selviytyjät game, teams get to compete and prepare for the coming winter.

The Muinaistulien yöt event (Fin. Night of Ancient Fires) will be held in the Stone Age Village on July 26–27 and August 30–31. During the events, it is possible to spend the night in the Village dwellings and experience the mystical atmosphere cast by the bonfire lit through the night.

The summer will climax with the traditional Ancient Marketplace event on August 2–3. The Stone Age Village will be filled with artisans, performers, ancient workshops, active stories, and atmospheric encounters. There are plenty of fun things to do and experience for the youngest children too.

Kierikki is a science centre meant for the entire family, only one-hour drive away from Oulu.
