Oulu red birch forest
A permanent conceptual and environmental artwork in Sonnisaari. The work includes red birch trees, a sculptural section, lighting, and culminates in an event where dozens of red birch trees are planted.
Red birch is a species of birch, the only specimen of which was found in the wild in Ylikiimingi. The species came to the attention of researchers in 1989. The Botanical Garden of the University of Oulu also participates in the artwork, where red birch has been studied since its discovery. Information about red birch is available in connection with the artworks.
Signs will be placed in the area, telling the story of the Muurmann Finns, who originated from Oulu County (year 1780) in poetic form, among other things. A short film will also be made about the whole. The construction of the work will culminate in an event and a performance.
Our impact to Culture-
climate change
The work is open to everyone and increases knowledge of local history through trees and people. The work spells out the history of the fates of the Finns of Muurmanni, who originated from Oulu County. The park area changes with the seasons and is illuminated in a special way. The work also comments on the climate catastrophe.
